The Southern Maine Volkssport Association invites you to walk our Year-Round and Seasonal volkswalks in Maine. ANYONE may take part regardless of age or level of physical fitness. Joggers and runners are welcome. An adult must accompany children under 12.

What are Volkssports? The Volkssport movement began in southern Germany in the 1960's. In 1968 the International Volkssport Verband (IVV) was founded in West Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The IVV has continued to grow and now includes over 25 nations. The American Volkssport Association (AVA) sponsors over 500 clubs throughout the United States. Awards and credits are recognized by all IVV member nations. Volkssports are known by the most popular event - Volkswalks, but also include events in swimming, bicycling, skating and skiing.

A volkswalk is a leisurely walk through a scenic, historic or interesting area over a predetermined route. The walk (bike, swim, ski, skate) is a non-competitive and participants walk at their own pace, thus making an excellent recreational opportunity for the entire family. This is a great way to meet new friends and a fun way to exercise.

The goal of the AVA is to promote physical fitness and good health by encouraging ALL PEOPLE to exercise in a stress free environment.
